Poison Arrow Frog Minutiae Also called poison dart frog. Found in rainforests of Central and South America. Live in areas of high humidity with dense vegetation and water. Noted for their kaleidoscopic colors. Bright colors warn potential predators to stay away. Considered the most poisonous animal on earth. The golden poison frog contains enough poison to kill 20,000 mice or 10 adult humans. Do not manufacture toxins. Toxins come from alkaloid-rich ants which they ingest. Also feed upon small insects, termites, worms, spiders and centipedes. Very small. Range in size from 1-6 centimeters. Have no natural predators. Most reproduce through oviparity. Female lays infertile eggs and male fertilizes them externally, similar to fish. Because females are extremely territorial and competitive, a parent (usually the male) guards the eggs in order to prevent a rival female from devouring them. In captivity, have lifespan of 5-12 years. Their toxins important in biomedical research. Used in painkillers. Studied to help treat neurological and muscular disorders.
